What is the Difference Between Doulas and Midwives?
10/26/2023Pregnancy and the postpartum period are often painted as times of sheer joy and excitement. While this can be true for many, it’s also essential to acknowledge that these periods can bring a myriad of emotions, some of which might catch you off guard. At Origins Birth and Wellness Collective, we want to make sure you put your mental health first.
Pregnancy Isn’t Always Bliss
You’re not alone if you feel overwhelmed by the emotional roller coaster of pregnancy. Amidst the physical changes, it’s entirely normal to grapple with anxiety, bouts of sadness, or persistent mood fluctuations. Understand that this doesn’t make you any different than many other expectant parents; we are all human and have our unique struggles.
The Reality of Postpartum
Once your baby arrives, the world might seem like it’s both standing still and spinning at the same time. Postpartum can be tricky. From ‘baby blues’ to the more severe postpartum mood disorders (PPMD), it’s important to know the signs and to remember that it’s okay not to feel okay. PPMD isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a complex interplay of hormonal, physical, and emotional factors.
Seeking Support is a Strength
You have every right to seek out support. Whether it’s from a partner, family, friends, or professional healthcare provider, remember that reaching out is an act of courage. Never be afraid to ask for help! Surround yourself with those who lift you up and understand your journey.
Self-Care Isn’t Selfish
Carving out time for yourself might seem impossible, but even a few minutes a day can make a difference. Whether it’s taking a short walk, enjoying a warm bath, or practicing mindfulness, you deserve moments of respite. Your mental well-being is intrinsically linked to your ability to care for your baby.
To You, The Warrior
Your mental health matters just as much now as it ever did. Remember, it’s okay to have moments of doubt and vulnerability. Embrace them, learn from them, and lean on your support system. You’re doing an incredible job, even on the days it doesn’t feel like it.
